L-Carnitine, also known as levocarnitine, is a naturally occurring compound that plays a crucial role in the body’s energy production. It’s a derivative of amino acids (specifically, lysine and methionine) and is produced in the liver and kidneys.
L-Carnitine’s primary function is to transport fatty acids from the cytoplasm into the mitochondria of cells. Mitochondria are often called the “powerhouses” of the cell because this is where fatty acids are broken down through a process called beta-oxidation to generate energy (ATP). Essentially, L-Carnitine helps your body convert fat into energy.
