Calcium propionate (also known as calcium propanoate) is an organic salt with the chemical formula Ca(C2H5COO)2. It\u2019s the calcium salt of propionic acid.Its primary use is as a <\/span>food additive<\/span>, specifically as a <\/span>preservative<\/span>.<\/span> It is listed as E number 282 in the Codex Alimentarius.<\/span><\/p>\n

Application<\/span><\/h2>\n

Baked goods: This is its most common application, especially in bread, cakes, pastries, muffins, and tortillas, to prevent mold growth. It\u2019s particularly effective in yeast-leavened products as it doesn\u2019t inhibit yeast fermentation.
\nDairy products: Used in cheeses, powdered milk, whey, and yogurt to control microbial growth.
\nProcessed meats: Can be found in hot dogs, ham, and lunch meats.
\nOther foods: Sometimes used in fruit juices, certain snacks, and prepared meals.
\nAgriculture: Used as a feed supplement for livestock and to prevent milk fever (a calcium deficiency disease) in cows.<\/p>\n
